New York AG Fines Walmart for Selling Realistic Toy Guns

Written by on May 28, 2025

Walmart has been fined by New York Attorney General Letitia James for violating state laws regarding the sale and distribution of realistic-looking toy guns. The AG’s office found that third-party sellers on Walmart’s platform shipped imitation firearms to nine addresses across the state, including locations in Western New York. State law requires toy guns to be brightly colored or transparent to avoid confusion with real weapons. Walmart was ordered to pay $14,000 in penalties and $2,000 in fees as part of the settlement. James encouraged the public to report sightings of such illegal toy guns to ensure compliance. The case highlights the risks posed by lifelike replicas, which have been linked to tragic incidents involving mistaken identity and unnecessary use of force. New York continues to enforce stringent toy gun regulations to safeguard communities, especially amid rising concerns over gun safety and misuse.
