Netflix Cancels Prince Documentary Amid Estate Dispute, New Project in Development

Netflix has canceled the release of its highly anticipated six-part Prince documentary, directed by Ezra Edelman. The streaming platform and Prince’s estate reached a mutual agreement allowing the estate to develop a new documentary using exclusive content from Prince’s archive.
The decision follows controversy over the film’s accuracy and portrayal of the late artist. Prince’s estate criticized the first cut as sensationalized and factually inaccurate, particularly in its depiction of his personal life and relationships. Reports also indicate that Edelman exceeded the original six-hour agreement, delivering nine hours of footage, which may have impacted music rights usage.
A September New York Times report revealed that the documentary included allegations from Prince’s ex-girlfriends about physical and emotional abuse and explored his childhood traumas and troubled marriage to Mayte Garcia.
Prince’s estate responded by posting “The vault has been freed” on social media, signaling a fresh start for a new, estate-approved documentary project.
