Applications open for Rochester’s ‘Buy the Block’ program

Written by on December 14, 2024

Rochester’s “Buy the Block” program has reopened applications, offering first-time homebuyers an opportunity to purchase affordable homes in under-invested areas of the city. The initiative aims to revitalize neighborhoods by building new homes and ensuring buyers spend no more than 30% of their income on housing.

Mayor Malik Evans highlighted the program’s focus on energy efficiency and community-building, with all homes featuring Energy Star-certified heating and cooling systems, as well as welcoming front porches to foster neighborly connections.

The second phase of the program introduces a variety of home styles, including single-story ranch homes for aging in place or special needs, two-story homes with three to four bedrooms for larger families, and compact options for smaller households. Currently, 32 homes priced between $99,000 and $155,000 are available in southwest Rochester, sold on a first-to-qualify, first-to-buy basis. Applicants must have a household income of 80% or less of the Area Median Income.
