Walking pneumonia is spiking, especially in kids. Here’s what to know

Cases of mycoplasma pneumonia, often called “walking pneumonia,” are surging across the U.S., especially among young children. This bacterial infection causes upper respiratory symptoms, including a lingering, disruptive cough, and can sometimes lead to red eyes, rashes, or headaches. Dr. Preeti Sharma, a pediatric pulmonologist, and other experts report that children commonly spread this infection in school, bringing it home to families. While most cases are mild, mycoplasma pneumonia can persist and is treated effectively with a macrolide antibiotic like Azithromycin. Parents are advised to watch for signs of dehydration, difficulty breathing, or prolonged fever and consult a doctor if symptoms persist. To prevent further spread, frequent hand-washing and covering coughs are essential as we enter winter’s respiratory virus season.
