The U.S. Army is investigating the death of 23-year-old Sgt. Sarah Roque, whose body was discovered in a dumpster near single-soldier housing at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, earlier this week. Roque, a bridge crewmember and K9 mine-dog handler with the 5th Engineer Battalion, was reported missing Monday after failing to appear at morning formation. Despite efforts by her family and unit to contact her, she remained unreachable. Maj. Gen. Christopher Beck confirmed that a person of interest is in custody, though details are limited due to the ongoing investigation, led by the Army Criminal Investigation Division with support from the FBI. Originally from Ligonier, Indiana, Roque enlisted in 2020 and had been recognized with awards, including the Army Commendation Medal. Her hometown has honored her by lowering flags to half-staff in her memory as the investigation continues, with autopsy results pending.
