In a tragic start to the new school year in Alabama, two high school football players have died within two weeks. Caden Tellier, a 16-year-old quarterback at John T. Morgan Academy in Selma, suffered a fatal brain injury during a game on Friday, leading to his death the following day. Tellier, remembered as a talented athlete and a positive presence at his school, collapsed during the third quarter of his team’s opening game and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
On the same day Tellier’s death was confirmed, a funeral was held for 14-year-old Semaj Wilkins, a running back at New Brockton High School. Wilkins collapsed during a hot afternoon practice and did not survive despite being rushed to a nearby hospital. Both deaths have left their respective communities mourning and searching for answers.
