A new live-action comedy series set in the “Star Trek” universe is being developed by actor-writer Tawny Newsome and writer-director Justin Simien. Known for their work on “Star Trek: Lower Decks” and “Dear White People” respectively, Newsome and Simien announced the project during the “Star Trek” Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con, with fellow executive producer Alex Kurtzman. The series, set in the 25th century, will follow Federation outsiders on a resort planet whose exploits are broadcast across the quadrant.

Newsome, who voices Beckett Mariner on “Lower Decks,” did not specify if she would act in the new series but will be involved in writing along with Simien and Kurtzman. Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth will also serve as executive producers.

Simien’s previous works include the TV series “Dear White People” and the films “Bad Hair” and “Haunted Mansion.” This new “Star Trek” project promises to bring a comedic twist to the storied sci-fi franchise.
