‘It’s not worth the risk:’ the dangers of ‘quickly’ leaving kids in car

Law enforcement in Rochester is emphasizing the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles, following two recent child abduction incidents. On Saturday night, a car was stolen on Dr. Samuel McCree Way with a two-year-old child inside. The vehicle was quickly recovered with the child unharmed. Earlier in the week, another abduction occurred, leading to a police chase ending in Wayne County, with both children safely recovered.

Trooper Lynnea Crane of the New York State Police highlighted that many carjackers are unaware of children in the backseat when they steal vehicles. She urged parents to never leave their children alone in cars, even for a quick errand, stressing that it only takes a second for something to go wrong.

Crane advises parents to memorize their vehicle’s plate number and any distinguishing features to aid police in case of an abduction. She questioned the worth of risking a child’s safety for a brief errand, underscoring the message that it’s not worth the risk.
