On May 9, 2024, a tragic accident occurred on I-90 East near Henrietta, resulting in the death of a New York State Thruway Authority worker and critical injuries to another. The incident happened just before 12:30 p.m. when a tractor-trailer driven by a 64-year-old man collided with the workers in a designated work zone. The 62-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 58-year-old man was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital in critical condition. New York State Police, led by Trooper Lynnea Crane, have ruled out drugs and alcohol as contributing factors, though the cause of the crash is still under investigation, and no charges have been filed yet. Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her condolences, emphasizing the importance of responsible driving and awareness in work zones to prevent such tragedies. The eastbound lanes of the interstate were closed for the investigation but reopened later that evening.
