‘Everybody wins’: Edison Tech class learn job skills while building community projects

At Rochester’s Edison Tech High School, Scott Moore is pioneering a carpentry class with a vision far beyond conventional skills training. His students, including those with intellectual and physical disabilities, engage in community service projects while honing their job skills. This season, they’re constructing eight food cupboards for city-wide distribution, offering free food to those in need, illustrating the program’s commitment to both practical skill development and community service. Through partnerships with local organizations, students gain real-world experience, allowing the school to enhance its resources while supporting community initiatives. Projects range from picnic tables to mobile skateboard ramps and refurbishing school spaces. The latest project, in collaboration with local advocate Devon Reynolds, focuses on creating a food cupboard network in Rochester. This effort aligns with the program’s goals within the New York State Alternate Assessment, preparing students for employment and promoting independence, while fostering a supportive, collaborative learning environment. Through this innovative program, students not only learn valuable skills but also make tangible contributions to their community, opening doors to future opportunities and altering perceptions of their capabilities.
