Grammys 2024: 10 Takeaways

(NPR) – Taylor Swift emerged as a dominant figure at the 2024 Grammy Awards, winning Album of the Year for “Midnights,” marking her fourth (and record-breaking) win in this category. She surprised fans by announcing a new album, “The Tortured Poets Department, ” that will come out in April.” Women won in all nine categories featured during the telecast. Performances by Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman and Joni Mitchell’s rendition of “Both Sides Now” were particularly moving. The speeches, especially from SZA and Victoria Monét, underscored the deep personal significance of the Grammys for the winners. Jay-Z’s acceptance speech for the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award included pointed remarks about the Recording Academy’s past decisions. The In Memoriam segment paid homage to recently deceased music legends with performances that captured their spirit. Billy Joel’s performance of his first new song in 17 years was a highlight, as was U2’s visually intense showcase inside Las Vegas’ Sphere.
