60 Rochester 911 Call Center Vacancies Causing Multiple Issues

Written by on October 11, 2024

According to data obtained by 13WHAM, the Rochester Emergency Communications Department is allowed a staff of 182 employees. However, the center currently has nearly 60 vacancies for telecommunicators, dispatchers, and supervisors. More than 30 employees work each eight-hour shift, but when someone calls out. According to Director of Rochester Emergency Communications Department Michael Cerretto, the staff is required to work overtime, often leading to mandatory 16-hour days.  “It’s not at a position where we’d like it to be, but the way the position is right now, we’re able to continue to maintain the service that the community is expecting from us,” He added that mandated OT is part of the employee’s contract. However, it sometimes leads to frustration, low morale, and even more staff turnover.
