Mom With Ties to Rochester Attempting to Flee Afghanistan: “Please don’t leave us behind”

Written by on August 23, 2021

The lives of thousands of Afghan people changed forever when the Taliban violently invaded the country, in just a span of a few days. A woman from Afghanistan, a mother of three, spoke out to local news organizations sharing her story and fears of the Taliban.

The woman wanted to remain anonymous for the safety of her and her family; “They [will] make a role model [of me] by killing me, raping me, violating me…My life is my phone, nothing else. I didn’t go outside, literally, not a single hour [have I] been outside. Not shopping, not going outside, not even down the stairs of the place that I live. You don’t have any place to go. No park, cinema, no friends to make, no outside, no TV, no [music]…”

This mother of 3 studied at Nazareth College for two months as part of a state department program for international students back in 2011. Since then, she became a women’s activist in Afghanistan and also worked for the U.S. Embassy for the span of 12 years.
