A 5-year-old boy was killed, and his mother was injured after a hyperbaric oxygen chamber exploded Friday morning at the Oxford Center in Troy, Michigan. The explosion occurred around 8 a.m., with the child pronounced dead at the scene. His mother, who was standing nearby, sustained arm injuries but survived.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, which can help treat conditions such as wound healing, carbon monoxide poisoning, and decompression sickness. However, the highly concentrated oxygen makes the environment extremely combustible, according to Troy Fire Lt. Keith Young.
The cause of the explosion and fire remains unknown, and the state authorities will lead the investigation. The Oxford Center expressed shock and grief, stating that no similar incidents had occurred in their 15 years of operation.
