Mom of 3 Kids Holds Down Burger King In S.C. – All On Her Own

A TikTok video is drawing attention to a Burger King employee in Columbia who says she was left to run the entire restaurant by herself during a shift that lasted more than 12 hours. Nykia Hamilton, a single mother of three, says she’s often forced to choose between providing for her family and spending time with them.

“I be missing out on my kids’ lives when I work so much,” Hamilton told WACH FOX. “I have to provide for them, but I really don’t have time to spend with them—and it hurts me a lot.” The video, filmed at the Burger King on Broad River Road, shows Hamilton managing the kitchen, drive-thru, food prep, and cleaning—all on her own. The post has garnered thousands of views and sparked public outrage and concern about working conditions in fast food restaurants. “One of my employees just quit on me, and they didn’t have anyone else to come in, so I had to work by myself, and close by myself,” Hamilton said. “Had to do the dishes, do prep, do the floor, do the front counter, drive-thru.” A customer recorded part of her shift and voiced frustration over the lack of support: “Y’all need to get her some help up in here and hire someone.” Hamilton says she eventually received assistance the following day—but not before enduring another solo closing shift. “I closed again by myself last night. I finally got help today. 11 o’clock and will stay until close at 11. We just don’t have any employees. Nobody wants to work anymore.” In response to the situation, Burger King released a statement to WACH FOX: At Burger King, it is our policy that all company and franchise owned restaurants require more than one Team Member to be working per shift. We are working with the Franchisee of this location to understand what happened and take any necessary action.
