Xerox to increase local manufacturing during coronavirus pandemic

Written by on April 14, 2020

Xerox Holdings Corporation has good news for Rochester residents and workers in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic: Xerox has partnered with Vortran Medical Technology to mass-produce Vortran’s FDA-approved Airway Pressure Monitor (APM-Plus) and disposable GO2Vent ventilator at its Rochester facility.

Vortran has struggled in recent weeks to meet production demands for these devices at its Sacramento facility in California. Although the GO2Vent isn’t used in intensive care units, it provides ventilator support via air, compressor or oxygen in emergency situations for patients who no longer need or have yet to need airway support. The GO2Vent can also be used for up to 30 days without the battery-operated APM-Plus, if necessary.

As Xerox CEO and vice chairman, John Visentin, explained in the Monday, April 6, press release: “Our smartest minds met (virtually) with Vortran’s smartest minds and figured out how to mass produce this critical technology.”

Gordon A. Wong, M.D., the CEO and co-founder of Vortran, also explained: “The partnership with Xerox has one clear goal, to help save as many lives as possible. With Vortran’s proven technology and Xerox’s ability to hyper-scale manufacturing, we believe we can supply healthcare providers as many as 1 million ventilators in the coming months.”

Both companies estimate that the partnership will result in mass production of as many as 40,000 ventilators this month if they can maintain their supply of parts. In June, they anticipate that they can then increase production to 150,000 to 200,000 ventilators.
