Will Vaccines Protect Us Against Omicron?

Written by on December 3, 2021

Only just a few weeks ago, researchers in Botswana and South Africa have discovered a new COVID-19, omicron. Now, just weeks later it has hit us in New York. Scientists are now asking, will vaccines protect against omicron? Well, many scientists are predicting that the efficacy of the vaccines will likely take a hit, probably a big hit, when it comes to stopping infections of omicron.

Paul Bieniasz, who is part of the team studying omicron, stated: “The goal was to answer the question: Is it possible for SARS-CoV-2 to completely evade neutralizing antibodies?…”They are the mutations that individually occur naturally and we combined them…Omicron appears to have certain combinations of mutations that together would confer more pervasive resistance to individual classes of antibodies.”
