Weight-loss drugs like Wegovy may help stave off some cancers

Written by on August 13, 2024

GLP-1 drugs, such as Wegovy, Ozempic, and Zepbound, originally developed for diabetes and weight loss, are showing promise in preventing certain cancers. These medications work by regulating hormones, slowing digestion, and reducing hunger, which helps manage obesity—a key risk factor for cancers like breast, colon, liver, and ovarian. Recent studies suggest that GLP-1 drugs can significantly lower cancer risk, even among those who aren’t overweight. For instance, a study presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncologists found that GLP-1 medications reduced the risk of 13 obesity-related cancers by 39%, a reduction more substantial than that achieved by bariatric surgery. Researchers believe these drugs may protect against cancer through multiple mechanisms, including better glycemic control and anti-inflammatory effects. More research is needed, but the potential of these drugs as a noninvasive cancer prevention strategy is promising.
