Wegman-Brand Egg Carton Package Changing to 100% Biodegradable

The polystyrene foam containers are what Wegmans-brand eggs are currently packaged in, but the company just announced a major change. Wegmans had made the announcement that it has phased out that packaging in favor of cartons that are made from 100% post-consumer recycled newsprint and paper products and are recyclable, compostable, and biodegradable.
By making this switch, the company stated it will eliminate 625,000 pounds of polystyrene foam from its stores annually, which is part of its goal to reduce in-store plastic packaging made from fossil fuels and other single-use plastics by 10 million pounds by 2024. Jason Wadsworth, packaging and sustainability category merchant for Wegmans, stated: “We are eliminating foam packaging wherever possible. It’s not widely recyclable and never will be.”
