Virtual Global Pride scheduled to take place of many Pride events in June

Written by on April 22, 2020

On Tuesday, April 14, organizers of the San Francisco Pride announced that the COVID-19 pandemic and associated social distancing forced them to cancel the 50th Anniversary SF Pride that had the theme Generations of Hope. Although organizers initially hoped to merely suspend the event until later this year, there is still so much unknown about the virus. The devastation it causes is also too severe. The SF Pride would have had over a million people in attendance, which is a gathering very difficult to imagine in a time when people are being told to not congregate in groups at all as the virus continues to spread through communities. Organizers of LGBTQ+ Pride events around the world have also made this difficult decision.

Yet, there is still a rainbow to be found in the light peeking through the clouds of this storm: Organizers from around the world have decided to celebrate Pride on June 27, 2020 with a 24-hour virtual Global Pride that will feature virtual events and entertainment, including regional live hosts, Pride speeches and talks, musical performances and other artistic demonstrations, and engaging content. Online event-goers will also be allowed to view a curated photo gallery of amazing memories from past SF Pride and other Pride celebrations. The event is being organized primarily by InterPride and the European Pride Organisers Association.

Interpride co-president Julian Sanjivan told Forbes that he wants Global Pride to inspire hope: “It’s going to inspire folks, going to give them courage, going to be able to bring about positivity, and that’s really important.”
