University of Rochester Medicine announced on Monday what it plans to do with its newly acquired 330,000 square feet of real estate, located in the former Sears location in the Marketplace Mall. This will be the new site for the UR Medicine Orthopedics & Physical Performance Center, where patients will go to receive orthopedic surgery and outpatient care.
The site will be transformed into a multi-story tower stocked with equipment, operating rooms and procedure rooms. UR Medicine is planning for this facility to be almost three times the size of UR Medicine’s 120,000 square foot orthopedic outpatient facility at Clinton Crossings, which is currently their largest center and sees 17,000 patients a month. The approximate estimated cost of this project is around $240 million, which UR Medicine plans to fund “through a combination of philanthropy, university funds, and borrowing.”
“I think you see these medical centers that have huge parking demands and access issues, and there’s no better location,” said Paul Wilmot, president of the Chili-based property management company, Wilmorite.
This $9 million acquisition deal would require the approval of the University of Rochester Board of Trustees, The New York State Department of Health and Town of Henrietta. If approved, construction would soon begin with an estimated completion time of 2023.
