Uptick Locally In Parvovirus Affecting Dogs

If you are a dog owner a quick reminder to make sure you get your dog vaccinated. It’s very important especially if you have a puppy. The vaccines protect them from viruses that could make them severely sick or cause death.

Across the country there has been an uptick in a parvo like virus that is causing illness and death in dogs and there is no exception here in Rochester.

The Director Communications at Lolly Pop Farm said they have seen cases here locally. There has also been an increase in parvovirus cases specifically in the 14621 area code.

Parvovirus is highly contagious and can affect all dogs but is most common in puppies. It can also affect unvaccinated adult dogs and elderly dogs.

The bacteria lives on surfaces for a very long time and is spread through contaminated feces. However, it still can be present on ground surfaces if it is not properly disinfected with dilutted bleach solution.

If your dog becoames sick do not wait to seek care – call your vet.
