Approximately 2,000 unionized caregivers and service workers from the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Strong Memorial Hospital participated in an informational picketing event yesterday.
The employees, who are part of the 1199SEIU union, gathered outside the hospital. Although they have not initiated a strike and continue to attend their regular duties, they are actively seeking increased wages and emphasizing the essential nature of their roles in the hospital’s daily functioning. NYS Senator Jeremy Cooney stated: “We know when we pay people a living wage, it improves health care outcomes. When people get paid a living wage, the people that are taking care of us, are able to take care of others.”
