Two Corners

Two Corners, by composer B.E. Boykin and librettist Jarrod Lee, tells the story of Florine, a Black woman (loosely based on Boykin’s paternal grandmother), and her friendship with Sarah, a white woman, over a two-decade period during the Civil Rights Era.

Florine Boykin leads her childhood friend, Sarah, down memory lane through the nostalgic power of a radio, examining and reviewing their friendship despite the racial tension surrounding them in the segregated and rural town of Wedowee, Alabama. Their bond is tested as they revisit memories and confront their shared past from their differing perspectives. Can their friendship survive their confronting of mid-twentieth century racial disparities and unrest? Or was their friendship a figment of their imaginations?

Soprano and Rochesterian Kearstin Piper Brown, fresh off her Metropolitan Opera debut, sings the lead with a stellar supporting cast.
