Many countries around the world don’t have the resources that they need to prevent the spread of the 2019 coronavirus and save lives. On Saturday, March 28, Twitch sponsored a 12-hour event called Twitch Stream Aid 2020 to raise funds for the World Health Organization’s “COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for WHO,” which is supported by the United Nations Foundation and the Swiss Philanthropy Foundation. The goal for the Solidarity Response Fund is to raise at least $675 million to provide aid from now until the end of April 2020 to countries that need financial help while combating COVID-19. Twitch raised over $2.7 million by the end of the night.
The event, which had hundreds of thousands of online viewers, featured live gaming competitions across two Fortnite Twitch Rival Tournaments and one UNO Twitch Rival Tournament, and visits from famous athletes like Aly Raisman, Lando Norris and Richard Sherman. A variety of musical guests included Ellie Goulding, Diplo, Garth Brooks, John Legend, Jordin Sparks, Krewella, OneRepublic, Sigrid, Sting & Shaggy, and Yola.
Amazon Music, Proctor & Gamble and Gillette, and Verizon sponsored the fundraiser. P&G donated $1,000,000 to the cause. Individual donations typically ranged between $2 and $100. The COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund is continuing to accept donations of any amount at https://covid19responsefund.org/.
