Tuition Will Be Free At A New York City Medical School Thanks To A $1 Billion Gift

Written by on February 28, 2024

The Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City has received a groundbreaking $1 billion donation from Ruth Gottesman, chairperson of the college’s board of trustees, making tuition free for its students. This generous gift, one of the largest to an educational institution in the U.S., was made possible through funds left by Gottesman’s late husband, financier David Gottesman. Starting from August, the college will offer tuition-free education “in perpetuity,” beginning with reimbursements for the spring 2024 semester for fourth-year students. This move aims to attract students committed to the college’s mission, regardless of financial status, and to empower them to pursue a wider range of projects and ideas. Ruth Gottesman’s contribution honors her late husband’s legacy and her longstanding involvement with the college, where she has significantly contributed to medical and educational advancements.
