Trump Doesn’t Support A Federal Mask Wearing Mandate

Written by on July 19, 2020

During an interview with Fox News, President Donald Trump was asked whether he thought it would be a good idea to institute a federal mask wearing mandate.

He responded, saying:

“No, I want people to have a certain freedom, and I don’t believe in that, no.”

When asked about the US director of the CDC’s statement that said if everyone in the country wore masks for four to six weeks, the pandemic would be over, the President said:

“I don’t agree with the statement that if everybody wear a mask everything disappears. Dr. Fauci said don’t wear a mask, our Surgeon General, terrific guy, said don’t wear a mask. Everybody was saying don’t wear a mask. All of a sudden everybody’s got to wear a mask, and as you know, masks cause problems too, with that being said, I’m a believer in masks. I think masks are good.”

He was referring a time in the early days of the pandemic when Dr. Fauci told Americans not to wear masks so that the frontline workers wouldn’t run out of PPE.

During a congressional hearing on June 30, Fauci is quoted saying:

“We recommend masks for everyone” and “masks are extremely important.”
