On Monday, Miguel Cardona was officially been confirmed by the Senate as Joe Biden’s education Secretary.
Cardona’s new role includes the responsibility of overseeing thousands of employees as well as being responsible for an annual budget of around $60 Billion. He will also be in charge of the country’s 1.5 trillion student loan portfolio.
One of Cardona’s first motions as secretary of education is to help fulfill Biden’s campaign promise of reopening the majority of K-8 public schools within the first 100 days of office. The congressional Democrats and the administration are trying to allocate around $130 billion in the coronavirus stimulus package to make this a reality.
“There is no substitute for a classroom experience for our students,” Cardona said during the hearing, adding that he’d bring a “mentality of partnership and clear communication to help recover our public education and reopen our schools.”
