A school shooting occurred late Monday morning at Abundant Life Christian School, a small Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin. A 15-year-old student, identified as Natalie Rupnow, who went by the name Samantha, opened fire during a study hall, killing a teacher and a fellow student, and injuring six others. Two of the injured students remain in critical condition. Police believe Rupnow died by suicide, as no shots were fired by responding officers.
The shooting was reported by a brave second-grade student who called 911. Authorities are investigating the origin of the weapon and whether parental negligence played a role, though no charges have been filed yet. Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers ordered flags flown at half-staff to honor the victims, expressing deep sorrow for the community.
This incident adds to a concerning trend, with at least 202 school shootings reported this year. Abundant Life Christian School, which educates around 420 students, had recently undergone safety training but does not have metal detectors. The school community is now grappling with grief as investigations continue.
