Strongest Hurricane This Year: Iota Slams Coastline, Two Weeks After Eta
Written by Site Hub on November 17, 2020
Late Monday night, hurricane Iota made landfall as a Category 4 storm across the northeastern coast of Nicaragua with storm surges of 15-20 feet and 30 inches of rainfall.
It is by far the most destructive hurricane this season, as it landed in almost the same place as hurricane Eta did two weeks ago.
All of Honduras was on high alert and by Sunday night, over 60,000 people were huddled together in 379 shelters around the northern coastal region.
Iota is the record 30th named storm of this year’s extraordinarily busy Atlantic hurricane season. Such activity has focused attention on climate change, which scientists say is causing wetter, stronger and more destructive storms.
The official end of hurricane season is Nov. 30.
