Start of Rochester City School District Will Likely Be Delayed

The school year is coming upon us and just days before the first bell, the Rochester City School District is scrambling to address a bus driver staffing shortage. The bus driver shortage will likely delay the start of the school year. On Friday, Superintendent Dr. Leslie Meyers-Small laid out her proposal to the School Board and members of the community. Dr. Leslie Meyers-Small’s plan would bring students in grades K through 8 back to the classroom next week, while students in grades 9 through 12 would be forced to begin the year remotely.
According to the district, the three companies contracted to transport students, First Student, Regional Transit Service, and Monroe School Transportation are 78 drivers short and more than 31,000 students rely on district transportation. Mayor Lovely Warren stated: “I know our superintendent is working very hard to make sure our students get the support that they need and the education that they deserve and I know they’re working with RGRTA as well because they do some of the transportation for the high school students.”
