Spike In Catalytic Coverter Thefts In Rochester

Written by on January 30, 2021

Not only do you have to worry about someone breaking into your car but lately stealing your catalytic converter. In Rochester, there has been a spike in thefts of catalytic converters which typically happen in warmer months.

There have been several reports of the auto part being stolen over the last few weeks. Some of the thefts have been caught on video but the footage is not good quality because it’s happening at night. So it’s hard to identify the thieves.

Thursday night eight catalytic converters were stolen off of RTA buses in Gates. The total cost to replace all of the parts is $11,000 according to Gates Police.

The reason for the thefts is most likely because of the rare precious metals found in the converters. Metals like platinum and palladium thieves can take to the junkyard and get quick cash up to around $150.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department suggests you park your vehicle inside if you can or in a well-lit area with video surveillance.
