Senate Will Vote On Next Coronavirus Relief Package This Week

Written by on September 9, 2020

On Tuesday, Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnel said that the Senate would be voting on a new coronavirus relief package on Thursday.

In his announcement, he said:

“The Senate is going to vote on this targeted proposal. We’re going to get the stonewalling of Democratic leaders out from behind closed doors and put this to a vote out here on the floor. Senators will not be voting on whether this package satisfies every one of their legislative hopes and dreams. That is not what we do in this chamber.”

The proposed bill will cost much less than the $3 Trillion price tag HEALS Act, put forth by the Democratic party several weeks ago.

The bill includes additional funding for the paycheck protection program and unemployment benefits of $300 / week.

Democrats have their own opinion of the proposal. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote a joint statement that said:

“Senate Republicans appear dead-set on another bill which doesn’t come close to addressing the problems and is headed nowhere. If anyone doubts McConnell’s true intent is anything but political, just look at the bill. This proposal is laden with poison pills Republicans know Democrats would never support.”

This is an ongoing story.
