Say Her Name: Remembering Marcy Borders, An Unsung Hero of the 9/11 Attacks

Written by on September 12, 2024

Marcy Borders, often remembered as the “Dust Lady” from a famous 9/11 photograph, was much more than the iconic image that captured her covered in ash after escaping the North Tower of the World Trade Center. On September 11, 2001, Borders, a 28-year-old legal assistant, survived the attacks but struggled with the trauma for years. The psychological impact of that day led her into a deep depression, addiction, and the loss of custody of her children. However, she eventually sought help, entered rehab, and began to rebuild her life.

Sadly, in 2014, Borders was diagnosed with stomach cancer, which she suspected was caused by her exposure to the toxic dust on 9/11. Despite her brave battle, she passed away in 2015 at the age of 42. Borders’ story reminds us that she was not only a symbol of the tragedy but also a mother, sister, and friend who fought hard to reclaim her life. Her daughter, Noelle, described her as a hero, and on the anniversary of 9/11, it’s important to honor her memory.
