Savannah Political Event Bans White Reporters From Entering

A local church in Savannah, Georgia has garnered national attention after a political meeting sparked controversy within the community this past Wednesday.

Bolton Street Baptist Church hosted a meeting to support African American candidates in the upcoming Savannah mayoral election. Many attendees arrived either in support of the meeting or to get information, but only African American members of the media were allowed inside.

The doors of the church each had a sign reading, “No media (T.V. Radio, etc.) Black Press Only!” White reporters and all television crews were turned away. The Trigon Group, promotors of the event, said that the intention of the meeting was to unify support in the African American community behind a single candidate.

This all comes as Savannah’s first white mayor in 20 years, Eddie DeLoach, seeks re-election in the upcoming election.
