San Francisco neighbors kept awake by driverless cars honking at each other

Written by on August 24, 2024

San Francisco residents in the South of Market neighborhood are frustrated by ongoing disturbances caused by honking from Waymo’s driverless taxis, despite recent software fixes intended to resolve the issue. The problem has garnered global attention, partly due to a live stream set up by resident Sophia Tung, capturing the noisy vehicles. Tung’s feed, initially a lighthearted project, has grown to include international viewers and even Waymo employees. Despite Waymo’s efforts, including software updates and an ice cream party for neighbors, the honking persists, disrupting sleeping residents most between 4 and 5am.
