Roz Brewer Named CEO of Walgreens, Only Black Woman to Lead a Fortune 500 Company

Written by on January 30, 2021

On Tuesday, Rosalind Brewer was named CEO of Walgreens, making her the only Black woman to lead a Fortune 500 company.

She will officially take the reigns on March 15.

Brewer is a product of Spelman College and currently serves as a board member at Amazon.com and the Chief Operating Officer of Starbucks.

During her three years at the coffee mega conglomerate, Brewer increased diversity in management and led Starbucks’ “to-go” operations as the pandemic hit.

In 2012, she made history as the first woman and first African American to serve as CEO of Sam’s Club, where she focused on health and wellness by doubling the amount of organic products offered by the wholesale club.

It’s awesome to hear that Walgreens stock actually went UP when the news broke.

BLACK HISTORY FACT:

Ursula Burns was the first Black woman to lead a Fortune 500 company when she became the CEO of Xerox in 2009.

Mary Winston was the second when she became interim CEO of Bed Bath and Beyond in 2019, but was only in the position for six months.
