Researchers Created A Map Of 20,000 Bee Species To Save The Declining Bee Population

Written by on November 25, 2020

Did you know there are 20,000 species of bees throughout the world? I didn’t know that either!

According to an article on Greenmatters.com scientists in China and Singapore have created a map that shows the location of the bees. The reason for the map is to help monitor all of the species of bees in the world. Scientists want to study their patterns to help conserve the bee population for the future. The map is the very first of its kind in the world.

Bees are responsible for 90% of flowering plants on the entire planet. Unfortunately, due to viruses, habit loss, pesticides, and poor nutrition bee populations are declining rapidly. If we don’t help the bees they will become extinct.

Researchers have found that bees only populate certain parts of the world. For example, not many species or if any bees are found in jungles or in tropical parts of the planet.

Why should you care if bees become extinct? The answer is very simple because bees are a very important part of the earth’s ecosystem. Most of the plants, vegetables, fruit, and nuts we eat along with honey are because of bees.

Rochester Fun Fact: Rochester Regional Health has a honeybee program. There are beehives on the rooftop of the hospital which keeps the bees safe and away from predators. They can travel up to five miles so they can produce honey while pollinating nearby yards.
