Dr. Salahuddin Malik, a beloved figure in Rochester and a co-founder of the Islamic Center of Rochester, has left a lasting legacy. Arriving in Rochester in 1967, Dr. Malik was instrumental in establishing the Islamic Center, helping to break ground for it in 1975. A respected professor at SUNY Brockport, Dr. Malik was known for his expertise in Muslim nationalism and British imperial history.
Those who knew him remember him as kind-hearted, charitable, and deeply devoted to supporting his community. James Marino, a colleague, described him as “pure in heart” and profoundly compassionate. Sareer Fazili, former president of the Islamic Center, called Dr. Malik “the father of the Muslim community in Rochester,” honoring his dedication to both Muslims and the underserved.
Dr. Malik’s legacy continues through the Malik Family Fund and The Salahuddin & Sarwat Malik History Lecture Fund, set up to support causes he championed in life.
