RCSD board of education to vote on naming School #3 after local Alice Holloway Young

Thursday night, the Rochester City School Board decided whether or not to rename a local school after the city’s first Black school principal, Alice Holloway Young.

Right now, the school is named after the founding father Nathaniel Rochester. However, his past has some concerned. Rochester was a slave owner and with such a diverse student body, parents have expressed worry.

Rochester First reported:

“This has been the main source of concern for parents and students in a district where 90% of the community is Black, Brown or Latinx. Over 100 people signed and brought forward a petition to the district, a number the district is required to act on.”

With that, RCSD superintendent Dr. Lesli Myers-Small stated:

“Owning slaves was horrific. So that happened, we need to figure out how to move forward from that.”
