Public Schools In New York State Will No Longer Be Able To Use Native American Mascots
Written by Andre on April 14, 2023
Native American names, logos, and mascots are expected to be banned in all public school in New York State. The new proposal was introduced last November when the New York State Department of education suggested schools begin making changes.
Any school using Native American names, logos, and mascots will be in violation of the Dignity Act.
There are still some schools in New York State with names that include Chiefs, Redskins, Red Raiders, and Indians. Advocates for the ban say these images are often stereotypical and offensive to the indigenous community.
The New York State Board of Regents said they will vote on the ban Monday.
