On Friday, President Donald Trump commuted the prison sentence of his long time advisor, Roger Stone Jr.
Stone is charged with 7 felony crimes and was about to be incarcerated for 40 months before the president intervened.
Before using his position of power to pardon his friend, the president released a statement saying that Stone was the victim of “overzealous prosecutors” from the “witch hunts” during the “Russia hoax” investigation.
At no time did the president say that Stone was innocent of the obstruction counts and other felonies, but kept saying that he had been wrongfully prosecuted because officials never filed charges during the investigation between Trump’s presidential campaign and any intervention by Russia.
California Democratic Representative Adam B. Schiff commented on the issue, saying:
“With this commutation, Trump makes clear that there are two systems of justice in America: one for his criminal friends, and one for everyone else.
