Today, President Joe Biden will most likely sign two more executive orders that would expand the assistance available for Americans in need during the pandemic and raising the minimum wage to $15 / hour for all federal workers.
The wage increase is based on his campaign promise to help federal workers and contractors. By signing this order, it sets the stage for the next one that requires federal contractors to pay at least $15 / hr and provide emergency leave. In addition, it gives guidelines for agencies to find out which workers aren’t making that much and bring them up to the new standard.
Brian Deese, the National Economic Council director referenced the latest census data that shows that over 20 million people don’t always have enough to eat
“The American people can’t afford to wait. And so many are hanging by a thread. They need help, and we are committed to doing everything we can to provide that help as quickly as possible.”
