Who would be in your wedding? Who would be there when you celebrate the birth of your child? Who are the people whose bedside you’d run to when they’re unwell? Who are the people you’re most respected by, who would be the downright best character witness?
Over time, the list of people you think of, when answering these questions, change. The list gets smaller. The entire life process is you filtering out the unnecessary – like theories, values, people, jobs and so on. Some values don’t apply to you anymore. The people you couldn’t be without become acquaintances and strangers. It’s not rude or cruel or self-serving. It’s just growth.
