Peanut the squirrel euthanized by DEC to test for rabies

Written by on November 3, 2024

Peanut, a popular squirrel who inspired an animal sanctuary in Pine City, New York, was euthanized by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to test for rabies. The DEC, in coordination with the Chemung County Health Department, seized Peanut and a rehabilitating raccoon on October 30 due to concerns over public health risks associated with keeping wild animals, which can potentially carry rabies. The decision came after an individual involved in the investigation was bitten by Peanut. Peanut’s owner, Mark Longo, expressed frustration, stating he had not been informed about the euthanization. The rabies testing is part of an effort to prevent potential human exposure to the virus.
