Ortho Clinical Diagnostics announces coronavirus antibody test developed in Rochester

Written by on April 13, 2020

Ortho Clinical Diagnostics announced that it has been developing a test at its Global Center of Excellence for R&D in Rochester to determine if a person has been exposed to the SARS-CoV-2. According to the Ortho Clinical Diagnostics press release, the VITROS® Immunodiagnostic Products Anti-SARS-CoV-2 Total Reagent Pack detects a wide range of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies.

The company developed the test for use in the field away from traditional laboratories. The first distribution is expected to occur in a few weeks in areas of the United States that have had the highest coronavirus numbers. The company’s executives and scientists believe that the test can provide more than the means to quickly diagnose suspected patients. They also hope that it can help epidemiologists track the coronavirus spread.

“Given the incredible demand for information to change the tide of this pandemic,” said the company’s Chief Executive Officer Chris Smith, “Ortho felt it was necessary to market as quickly as possible with a notification to the FDA. We are working to make our antibody test kit available to the areas with the greatest need first and will be working in parallel to both increase our test kit production and follow additional regulatory pathways to secure further approvals.”
