The New York State Education Department (NYSED) released its 2023-2024 student performance report, covering statewide standardized tests for grades 3-8 and high school. Key findings include declines in proficiency across English, math, and science. Among grades 3-8, 46% of students were proficient in English language arts, 52% in math, and only 35% in science. English learners showed better outcomes in higher grades, with 50% achieving top proficiency levels.
High school Regents exam results indicated stronger performance, with 79% proficiency in English language arts, 74% in Algebra II, and 78% in U.S. history. The New York State Alternate Assessment (NYSAA), designed for students with severe cognitive disabilities, yielded average proficiency rates of 78%.
NYSED’s report highlighted demographic breakdowns, participation rates, and trends, noting that math scores outperformed English and science. Proficiency disparities persisted, reflecting ongoing challenges in education statewide.
