NYDOH Requires COVID Boosters for Eligible Students for After-School Activities

A new guidance released this week from the New York Department of Health says students who were exposed to COVID and are eligible for a booster shot must be boosted to attend after-school clubs and sports. In addition to this requirement, students who test positive for COVID can return to sports with clearance from their primary care after the standard 10 days of quarantine. Any student who is not eligible for a booster shot will still be able to participate.
Local educators, such as Director of Physical Education and Athletics for the Hilton School District Mike Giruzzi, see this being a challenge as the districts will have to figure out which students are vaccinated, which are eligible for a booster, and whether they’ve received the booster. Giruzzi stated: “I think the guidance probably in many ways confuses many people. We got people who were exposed, back in social studies class today but they potentially might not be able to come to practice.”
