New York State to receive $4.3 billion from CARES Act

Written by on April 29, 2020

Hospitals in New York state should soon receive the help that they need to combat SARS-CoV-2. On Wednesday, April 22, Senator Chuck Schumer announced to the public that New York State is to receive $4.3 billion out of a total of $10 billion from the portion of the CARES Act designed to help hospitals in “hot spots” throughout the country.

In his statement, Schumer explained: “Our hospitals and providers have been the vanguard in the fight against the coronavirus, and these critical dollars will help keep the fight against the virus going strong. New York and its hospitals have been the hardest hit in the nation, and with this funding going out, the frontline fight being waged by our healthcare system and its incredible workforce will receive the hot spot dollars they need and so very much deserve to keep saving lives.”

On Tuesday, the Senate passed a bill for $484 billion in pandemic relief funds. If the House passes the bill on Thursday, the government would disperse another $75 billion to hospitals with emphasis again to providing assistance to COVID-19 hot spots.

This is an ongoing story. House leaders like Speaker Nancy Pelosi have made it clear that they still anticipate the passage of another bill soon to provide state and local aid. Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell has stated that the only way he will approve another vote is if the Senate convenes in person.
