New York Issues New License Plate Design

Written by on June 26, 2020

Around this time last year, there was an online poll to pick the new design for New York’s license plate.

The new design, nicknamed the Excelsior plates by the DMV, is set to replace the current Empire Gold plates that have a blue background and gold lettering.

The Excelsior plates have a white background and blue lettering. They feature the Statue of Liberty, Adirondack mountains, the Manhattan skyline and a lighthouse across the bottom. Excelsior, the state’s motto, is stamped in gold, below the license plate number.

The new plates are being distributed as each county runs out of Empire Gold.

When drivers renew their registration, they will have the option to keep their old plates, or purchase new ones for $25. The cost for keeping your old number on the new plate is an additional $20.
